Undergraduate Standard Leave of Absence Request Form

Please note: this form is intended for students with a primary major in the Whiting School of Engineering. If you are a student with a primary major in the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences, please click here to request a leave of absence.

A Standard Leave of Absence (sLOA) is when a student requests to take some time away from campus for personal reasons, which are not medically based, for a minimum of one full fall or spring semester. A sLOA can only be requested through the last day to drop classes in a fall or spring term. [After the drop class deadline, an Emergency Leave of Absence (eLOA) needs to be requested. Medically based requests are considered a Medical Leave of Absence (mLOA). eLOA and mLOA are requested and administered through Student Outreach & Support. Please visit the university catalogue for more information about the different types of LOAs.]

For engineering undergraduates, the request is submitted by completing the form below. Once the request has been received, it is reviewed by the Assistant Director for Undergraduate Academic Advising. If approved, the Assistant Director will let the student know and will forward it to the Registrar’s Office, Homewood Student Accounts, Housing & Dining, and any other relevant office. Students, however, should always contact relevant offices independently to see what impact an LOA may have.

Student's Name (as listed in SIS)*
Select primary engineering major.
First-year students: if this is a request before the first day of FALL term (only), please contact the Admissions Office at applyhelp@jhu.edu. Otherwise, you may proceed with this form.
(e.g. Fall 2020, Spring 2021, etc.)

*If a student is currently registered in the effective term of LOA the amount of tuition refund, if applicable, will vary.

(e.g. Fall 2020, Spring 2021, etc.)

For the time period away, the student’s account and record are basically on hold and will reopen the semester the student is set to return. It should also be noted that a student’s academic status at JHU will remain in effect upon returning (i.e. if a student is on academic probation before taking the sLOA, s/he will be on it when s/he returns). If there has been no communication a few weeks prior to the intended term of return, a student should contact the Undergraduate Engineering Advising Office so that s/he will be allowed to register for classes.

When sLOAs are taken, students are not permitted to transfer coursework taken elsewhere during that time. It is assumed that a sLOA is taken because the student is not able to balance academic work with whatever situation needs attention during the time away.

Once the form is submitted, please allow 7-10 business days for it to be reviewed. You will receive an email regarding the decision.
